Street Cleaning 

Regular street cleaning is carried out across the Ards and North Down Borough every day, using a scheduled system based on 4 street sweeping zones. 
  
The 4 street cleaning zones are defined as:  

• Category 1 zones include town centres and shopping streets (cleaned on a daily basis) 
• Category 2 zones include high density residential areas, such as terraced housing (cleaned on a three-weekly basis) 
• Category 3 zones include low density residential areas, such as semi-detached and detached housing (cleaned on a three-weekly basis) 
• Category 4 zones are those areas not covered by any of the other three zones and include country roads (litter picked as and when required)

Public Litter Bins 

On-street bins in our city, towns and villages are serviced by Council's Waste and Cleansing Services department, with bins in our parks and at our local beaches serviced by the Parks department.  

Please note: Crawfordsburn and Helen's Bay beaches, including bins, are managed by NIEA, not the Council.  

During holidays periods, seasonal bins are placed in high traffic areas and additional collections are scheduled. However, during good weather, high levels of rubbish can result in bins filling up quickly.  If bins are full, or you can't find a bin near you, please take your rubbish home and recycle it via your household bins. Help us look after our outdoor shared spaces so that everyone can enjoy them year round.

Request for a new litter bin area/location

If you would like us to consider a new public litter bin location, please submit a request via our reporting form at General Enquiries - Ards and North Down Borough Council 

Please mark your message for the attention of either Cleansing or Parks, depending on location being requested.

The relevant service area will then review if the requested location meets the necessary criteria for new/additional bins.
