Your Recycling Matters
Residents across Ards and North Down are already making a significant contribution to protecting the environment. Every year, around 47,000 tonnes of material are recycled across the Borough, helping achieve a household recycling rate of 56%. These efforts help reduce waste, avoid around 17,000 tonnes of carbon emissions and save an estimated £5 million in disposal costs.
The new Your Recycling Matters campaign builds on this success by encouraging everyone to recycle more and recycle right. By making the correct choices at home, we can all help create a cleaner, greener Borough for future generations.

Why Recycling Matters
When materials are recycled correctly, they can be transformed into new products instead of being sent for disposal. Recycling helps to:
- Protect natural resources
- Reduce waste sent for disposal
- Cut carbon emissions
- Support a more sustainable future
- Save money that can be invested in local services
Every item placed in the right bin helps make a difference.
Recycle More. Recycle Right.
One of the biggest challenges for recycling services is contamination, when incorrect items are placed in recycling bins. This can prevent recyclable materials from being processed successfully. The Your Recycling Matters campaign will provide practical advice to help residents:
- Understand what can and cannot be recycled
- Reduce contamination in recycling bins
- Increase kerbside recycling
- Get the most from recycling services across the Borough
By getting the basics right, we can all help improve recycling rates and reduce waste.
What Happens to Your Recycling?
Many people wonder what happens once their recycling is collected.
As part of the campaign, we are working with MyRecyclingNI to share information about where materials go and how they are turned into new products. Understanding the recycling journey helps build confidence in the process and shows the real impact that every household can have. Find out more:
