Trees and Development Guidance and FAQs

Trees are an important part of Ards and North Down's natural and built environment, contributing to the character of our towns, villages and countryside while providing significant environmental and amenity benefits.

The Trees and Development in the Borough guidance document has been prepared by the Council's Planning Service to assist residents, landowners, developers and planning professionals in understanding the protection afforded to trees and the role of trees within the planning process. The guidance explains the requirements relating to trees protected by virtue of Tree Preservation Orders, Conservation Area designation or planning conditions, and the information required where development proposals may affect existing trees.

By promoting the protection, management and successful integration of trees within development, the guidance aims to help ensure that the Borough's valuable tree resource continues to be conserved and enhanced for future generations.

To complement the guidance document, the Council has also prepared a series of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs), providing practical information and answers to common queries relating to protected trees, works to trees and trees affected by development proposals.
