Walking

Walking is a free and accessible way to exercise. It provides a simple and effective method to improve physical and mental wellbeing.

A short walk each day can help reduce the risk of developing a number of health conditions, whilst also improving mood, energy levels and general wellbeing.

Walking outdoors in nature is a great way to explore our surroundings, and in Ards and North Down there are lots of fantastic places to discover!

Walking for All Launches in Ards and North Down

People across Ards and North Down are being invited to step into better health and wellbeing with the launch of Walking for All, a new community walking programme.

Launching across the Borough in Spring 2026, Walking for All will introduce a series of free, led walks in familiar community spaces. These walks not only help adults of all ages and abilities get active, enjoy local outdoor spaces, and connect with others, but also offers a meaningful opportunity to make a difference in your community

Walking For All is supported by PEACEPLUS, a programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB). The programme is delivered by Outscape, a charity and not-for-profit organisation, in partnership with Ards and North Down Borough Council and is part of a wider cross-border initiative establishing hundreds of walking groups.

Why walking is important

Walking is the most popular form of physical activity in Ireland. Just 30 minutes of walking a day can help reduce the risk of conditions such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes and obesity, while also improving mood, energy levels and mental wellbeing.

Your new Walking for All Officer - Jenny Mullan

Jenny Mullan, the newly appointed Walking for All Officer for Ards and North Down, will support the development of these walking groups across the county, working closely with local communities.

A key part of the programme is the recruitment of Walk Leaders and Jenny is now actively seeking residents interested in leading walks on a regular basis. No previous experience is needed as Jenny will deliver Walk Leader training and support leaders to grow and develop their walk, helping to bring people together and improve the health and wellbeing of residents in the area.

Becoming a Walk Leader is a rewarding way to support local wellbeing, meet new people, and play an active role in strengthening community connections. There will also be opportunities for local walking groups to meet other groups across the border counties and further into Northern Ireland.

How can you get involved?

People and community groups interested in either joining a walk or stepping forward as a Walk Leader should visit the new Walking for All website www.walkingforall.com and fill in an expression of interest form. Jenny will contact you.

Alternatively, you can contact Jenny directly at jenny.mullan@ardsandnorthdown.gov.uk or 07772 399 197.
