Leid AND Lairn Programme Celebrates Ulster-Scots Language, Heritage and Tradition Across Ards and North Down

Ards and North Down Borough Council has launched its latest Leid AND Lairn programme, celebrating Ulster-Scots language, heritage, music and storytelling through a series of events taking place across the Borough and at the Ulster Folk Museum. 

Running throughout Autumn 2026, the programme offers opportunities for residents and visitors to explore Ulster-Scots culture through talks, guided tours, music, dance, language workshops and unique heritage experiences. 

Highlights include a performance by acclaimed Northern Ireland trio TRÚ at Donaghadee Parish Church's as part of its 400th anniversary celebrations, a lively Ulster-Scots Ceilidh Tea Dance in Newtownards, an introduction to the Ulster-Scots language with Dr Dayna Jost and heritage talks exploring the histories of Ballywalter Presbyterian Church and Donaghadee Parish Church.

The Ulster Folk Museum will also host a series of events as part of the programme. These include Discover Ulster-Scots Music Traditions, The Story and Craft of Kilts, Whiskey and Words, and Rhymin Rab's Ramble, a self-guided tour exploring the Ulster-Scots language through the words of Robert Huddleston.

"Leid AND Lairn offers a wonderful opportunity to explore the stories, traditions and language that have helped shape our Borough. The programme brings together local history, music, heritage and community learning in ways that are engaging and accessible, and I would encourage everyone to take a look at what's on offer and join us in learning more about the Ulster-Scots traditions, language and history that form an important part of our local heritage."
