Children Help Shape New £170,000 Play Parks in Donaghadee and Greyabbey
Released: Wednesday 17 June 2026
Children from local primary schools were at the heart of two major play park refurbishment projects officially launched recently.
The first of the new facilities was unveiled at Northfield, Donaghadee, with pupils from Donaghadee Primary School joining representatives and project partners to celebrate the opening. A second refurbished play park at Islandview in Greyabbey was officially launched, with the Mayor in attendance.
Both play areas received investments of £170,000, transforming facilities that were due for refurbishment and providing modern, inclusive spaces for children and families to enjoy.
A key feature of both projects was the involvement of local schoolchildren throughout the design process. Engagement sessions were held with pupils, giving them the opportunity to view proposed designs, learn about different types of play equipment, ask questions and vote on their preferred options.
The feedback gathered during these sessions played an important role in shaping the final designs, ensuring the new facilities reflected the wishes and needs of the young people who would use them most.
Following completion of the works, pupils were invited back to the finished play parks to see how their ideas had been brought to life and to enjoy a morning of play on the new equipment.
The projects highlight the value of engaging children in community developments and demonstrate how their voices can help create welcoming and enjoyable spaces for future generations.
The refurbished facilities at Northfield and Islandview now provide enhanced opportunities for outdoor play, physical activity and social interaction for local families, representing a significant investment in community wellbeing across the area.
