Funded by Ards and North Down PCSP, the devices are designed to display drivers' travelling speed and, where necessary, provide a clear reminder to slow down. The new SIDs have been installed at the following locations: B172 Movilla Road, Newtownards, A2 Millisle Road, Donaghadee (The Commons); C255 Manse Road, Carrowdore, Rathgael Road, Bangor, Gransha Road, Bangor and Old Belfast Road, Bangor.

Pete Wray, Chair of PCSP, said:
"As Chair of the Policing and Community Safety Partnership, I am delighted that we have been able to increase the number of SIDs across the Borough. Unfortunately, last year we saw an increase in deaths and serious injuries on our roads. We must do everything we can to improve road safety, and SIDs are an excellent tool in helping us do that.

"They have two main benefits. Firstly, they indicate to drivers the speed they are travelling at. In some cases, drivers may not be aware that they are going over the speed limit, so this acts as a reminder to slow down. Secondly, data is collected from each SID and analysed. This allows us to identify areas where there may be a high level of speeding, and, where necessary, we can use enforcement measures in partnership with the PSNI."

Deborah Marcus, Independent Member and Vice Chair of PCSP, added:
"I am a strong advocate of speed reduction and safe driving in built-up areas. SIDs are a great tool that can help educate drivers and improve road safety on our local streets. I hope they serve as an important reminder to everyone to reduce speed and keep our communities safe. I pray that there are no more lives lost to speed."
