The annual Positive Ageing Roadshow was held on 2 October at Ards Blair Mayne Wellbeing and Leisure Complex, Newtownards. 176 residents aged 50+ from across the Borough attended. The free event, delivered by Age Friendly Ards and North Down, the Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP), the Public Health Agency, and the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust, continues to grow in popularity each year.

Held during Positive Ageing Month, this large-scale event has become well established, offering older people a valuable opportunity to engage with services, learn something new, and access vital support in a welcoming and inclusive environment. 31 organisations exhibited on the day, sharing advice and information on everything from health and wellbeing to home safety, financial support, and social opportunities. Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with many praising the welcoming atmosphere and the relevance of the presentations.

The event was officially opened by Mayor of Ards and North Down, Councillor Gillian McCollum who said:

"Positive Ageing Month is a celebration of our older people and the value they bring to our community. The Roadshow was designed to promote local support services that will help people to age well. It raised awareness of how people can keep safe, keep active and stay connected through social and recreational activities available. It was lovely to see so many people there making use of the supports available to them.

"The Roadshow itself was extremely successful. The event was fully booked - which shows how older residents in Ards and North Down really prioritise their physical and mental wellbeing.

"Many thanks to all those who helped organise and to those who attended this very worthwhile event."

Presentations on the day covered a range of important topics. The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service shared life-saving initiatives aimed at improving emergency response and community safety. The Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) provided practical advice on home security and personal safety. North Down and Ards Women's Aid addressed the often-overlooked issue of domestic abuse affecting older women, bringing attention to a topic that deserves greater awareness. The event concluded with a Falls Prevention activity led by Debbie Quinn, Active Ageing Instructor, promoting strength, balance, and safety in everyday life.

The event reinforced the Borough's commitment to ensuring older people can live well, stay safe, and remain connected within their communities.
