Ards and North Down Borough Council Joins Northern Ireland's First-Ever Reuse & Repair Week to "Keep Her Lit...Repair It!"

Ards and North Down Borough Council is proud to take part in Reuse and Repair Week 2026 (30 May to 6 June). This landmark initiative celebrates the creativity, ingenuity and "Keep Her Lit...Repair It!" spirit of communities across Northern Ireland, highlighting the importance of reuse, repair and sharing skills to support a more sustainable future.

Organised by the Northern Ireland Resources Network (NIRN) and funded by the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) through the Carrier Bag Levy, the week-long programme aims to make reuse and repair the norm rather than the exception.

To mark the occasion, Council hosted a Bike Health Check & Repair event. Free bike health checks and minor repairs were provided by Jon The Pedaler, alongside Ards and North Down Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) who offered Bicycle Security Marking. Bikes were marked with a unique identifier linked to the UK's national, police-approved cycle database, helping to deter theft and improve recovery rates.

Reuse and Repair Week showcases the positive impact of practical, local action. From fixing broken household items and redistributing surplus food to upcycling and selling pre-loved furniture, communities are finding creative ways to extend the life of everyday items, reduce waste and protect the environment.

Deputy Mayor of Ards and North Down, Councillor Vicky Moore, said:

"We are thrilled to be part of this remarkable week. Our Bike Health Check & Repair event brought people together to share skills and demonstrate how 'Keep Her Lit...Repair It!' is more than just a slogan. It's a call to action for every household in our Borough to recognise the value in what they already own, conserve valuable resources and reduce our carbon footprint."
