Pupils from Killard School, Clifton School, St Columbanus College, Bangor Academy and Movilla High School took part, coming together to share their experiences as Student Councils and to explore how young people can help shape their communities. The event formed part of the Borough's ongoing commitment to student inclusivity, empowerment and fostering a strong sense of Belonging.

During the morning, students experienced local democracy first‑hand inside the Council Chamber. Activities included a structured debate on the motion "Should you or should you not have to wear a school uniform?", followed by a lively Question Time session with the Mayor.

Pupils then enjoyed a series of interactive breakout activities, including trying on the Mayoral robes, taking photos with the Mayor and learning more about the history of the Council Chamber.

Reflecting on the morning, Mayor of Ards and North Down, Councillor Gillian McCollum, said:

""It was an absolute pleasure to welcome these bright, engaged young people to City Hall today. Their confidence, curiosity and willingness to express their views were on full display as they debated whether or not students should wear school uniforms — a lively discussion that resulted in a close vote, with 13 in favour, 16 against and 2 abstaining. Moments like this show just how important it is to create inclusive opportunities for students to participate in civic life. Events such as this help them see that their voices matter - they have a real role to play in shaping the future of our Borough, and that everyone belongs here."

The event provided a positive example of local democracy in action, showcasing how young people across Ards and North Down are being supported to contribute, express their opinions and engage meaningfully.
