Ards and North Down Borough Council Honours Sporting Legends with Wall of Fame Inductions

Ards and North Down Borough Council has officially welcomed two of the Borough's most distinguished sporting figures, cyclist Martyn Irvine and boxer Davy Larmour, into its Sporting Wall of Fame during a special ceremony at Ards Blair Mayne Leisure and Wellbeing Complex, Newtownards.

The event brought together family members, friends, elected representatives, sporting representatives and community leaders to celebrate the outstanding achievements and lasting legacy of both inductees.

Martyn Irvine, one of Ireland's most successful cyclists, attended the ceremony alongside family, friends and supporters. Davy Larmour, widely regarded as one of Northern Ireland's most accomplished boxers, was unable to attend but was warmly recognised throughout the event for both his sporting achievements and his contribution to boxing.

The Sporting Wall of Fame recognises individuals who have reached the highest levels of sporting achievement while also making a significant contribution to the development and promotion of sport within their communities.

The Mayor of Ards and North Down, Councillor Craig Blaney, said:

"Our Sporting Wall of Fame exists to recognise individuals who have reached the pinnacle of achievement in their chosen sport while inspiring future generations to follow in their footsteps.

Today, we celebrate not only the medals, titles and records achieved by Martyn Irvine and Davy Larmour, but also the dedication, perseverance, leadership and commitment they have shown throughout their careers and beyond."

Reflecting on Davy Larmour's achievements, the Mayor highlighted his success on the international boxing stage, including representing Ireland and winning a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. He also praised Mr Larmour's continued commitment to using sport as a positive force to inspire young people and strengthen communities.

The Mayor also recognised Martyn Irvine's exceptional cycling career, which saw him become a world champion and one of Ireland's most successful track cyclists. His achievements at the highest level of international competition have inspired athletes across the country and demonstrated the rewards of determination, ambition and hard work. Since retiring from elite competition, Mr Irvine has continued to play an important role in supporting and developing future generations of cyclists.

A key theme of the ceremony was the recognition that sporting success is rarely achieved alone. Tribute was paid to the parents, family members, friends, coaches and volunteers whose support, guidance and encouragement helped both athletes achieve their goals.

The Mayor added:

"Both inductees remind us that sport is about much more than winning. It has the power to build confidence, strengthen communities, improve health and wellbeing, and bring people together.

Davy and Martyn have demonstrated these values throughout their lives and careers, making them truly deserving recipients of this honour."
