Funded by the Department for Communities and supported by Ards and North Down Borough Council, the grant will support eligible businesses to carry out painting and power washing of their shopfront ahead of the summer season, helping to create more attractive streetscapes, increase footfall and strengthen local pride in place.

The initiative is open to any business or building owner operating from a commercial property within the designated town or city centre boundaries and currently paying commercial rates.

The Mayor of Ards and North Down, Councillor Gillian McCollum, said:
"This grant is a fantastic opportunity for local businesses to enhance the appearance of their premises and contribute to the overall vibrancy of our city and town centres. By working together, we can create more welcoming and attractive spaces that encourage residents and visitors to spend time locally, supporting our high streets and boosting the local economy."

The Freshen Up Grant forms part of the Council's ongoing commitment to supporting vibrant, welcoming and economically resilient high streets, making our Borough an attractive place to live, work and visit.

Applications are now open and will close on Friday 29 May 2026 at 12 noon. Businesses are encouraged to apply early to take advantage of this opportunity and play a part in revitalising their local area.
