Ards and North Down Borough Council installed 10 new dual-compartment recycling bins at key locations around the perimeter of Ward Park, as part of a six-month pilot scheme.

The new bins allow park users to separate plastic bottles and cans from general waste, helping to increase recycling rates and reduce the amount of recyclable material sent for disposal.

The initiative forms part of the Council's ongoing commitment to improving sustainability and encouraging positive environmental behaviours across the Borough.

The trial will run until March 2027 and will be evaluated through a waste composition study to assess how effectively the bins are being used. The findings will help determine whether the scheme should become a permanent feature in Ward Park and potentially expand to other locations.

Mayor of Ards and North Down, Councillor Craig Blaney said,

"We are delighted to have introduced this new 'Recycling on the Go' initiative in Ward Park. Every year thousands of residents and visitors enjoy this wonderful community space, and these new bins make it easier than ever for people to do their bit for the environment.

Recycling a plastic bottle or drinks can may seem like a small action, but collectively these choices can make a significant difference in reducing waste and protecting our local environment. We encourage everyone using the park to take part in the trial and help us understand how this approach could benefit communities across the Borough."

Council officers will monitor participation levels and the quality of materials collected throughout the pilot period.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to use the bins correctly by placing plastic bottles and cans in the recycling compartment and all other waste in the general litter section.
