Animal Welfare

The welfare of animals is protected by the Welfare of Animals Act 2011 and Councils are responsible for enforcement in respect of non-farmed animals: domestic pets and equines (horses and donkeys).

Local councils have adopted a collaborative regional approach and appointed five animal welfare officers across Northern Ireland.  Ards and North Down is part of the Eastern Area of Councils.

If you need to report an animal welfare issue you may do this during office hours (Monday - Friday 9:00am - 5:00pm) by calling the Eastern Group Animal Welfare Officer on 028 9049 4567.  An out of hours service operates 9:00am - 5:00pm Saturdays and Sundays and Public Holidays only, telephone 0782 499 4490.
