Shared Spaces and Services
The Theme has focused on the creation of a more cohesive society through the increased provision of shard spaces and services Across the Ards and North Down Borough. The programme aims to ensure that each area becomes a shared space which all members of the community can use.
The programme has focused on 4 towns and villages in the Ards and North Down Borough: Portaferry, Comber, Holywood and Portavogie. The plans included the development of informal recreation and leisure facilities.
The spaces have been transformed through dialogue, connecting workshops around horticulture, biodiversity, leisure and sports with communities across the area’s leading to the creation of consensual spaces and a more cohesive and connected society.
Programmes of participative activities have accompanied then project to ensure connections between people through common interest and the environment.
Works commenced in Comber and Portaferry in January 2020 and works in Portavogie and Holywood commenced in summer 2020.
Portaferry Nugent’s Wood
The works in Nugent’s wood are now complete. This is a natural/ sympathetic scheme and works include improvements to the existing walking trail path, seating, the installation of wooden sculptures and new entrance signage installed. Repairs have also been made to the existing stone wall along the path and new fencing installed along the boundaries.

Comber Muckers Field
These works include a new skate park with fencing and lighting, a concrete base foundation to enable a teen shelter to be installed at a later date, and an upgrade and widening of the existing path surrounding the entire field which will connect the Comber to Newtownards Greenway.
Holywood (Nature Park)
This is a natural/ sympathetic scheme and works include new entrance signage and gate, new paving and improvements to existing paths, and some tree planting and wildflower meadow seeding
Portavogie (New Harbour Road)
These works include a new skate park with fencing and lighting and a concrete base foundation to enable a teen shelter to be installed at a later date.
Portavogie (Anchor Car Park)
These works include the installation of outdoor gym equipment.
