Ards and North Down Police and Community Safety Partnership, working with Strangford Lough and Lecale Partnership, the PSNI and Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs, recently held a beachfront safety event at Millisle. It aimed to inform the public about the safe use of Jet Skis, alongside providing security marking and advice to owners to help stop Jet Skis and their trailers from being stolen.

The event also provided the opportunity to launch new guidelines for use of Jet Skis that have been developed by the Strangford Lough and Lecale partnership.

Over the last year, there has been an increase in participation in a range of water sports on Strangford Lough. Jet Skis can cause some safety concerns for beach users and swimmers and so the guidelines have been developed to help ensure everyone’s safety.

Residents in the Millisle area were keen to talk with the event organisers to better understand how Jet Skis can be launched safely from the beach and the slipway.

Jet Ski users themselves need to be kept safe while operating their craft and those attending the event were issued with the new guidelines and waterproof pouches to store their mobile phones in case they need to contact the emergency services whilst on the water. They were also encouraged to be alert to the impact they can have on marine wildlife – both through collision and noise disruption. Jet Ski users share the coastal waters with seals, dolphins and porpoises and the marine environment needs to be respected.

Commenting on the event, Chair of Ards and North Down’s PCSP, Councillor David Chambers said: “I am pleased that the PCSP, working with other agencies, can help keep people and property safe at the same time working with environmental agencies to advise and protect the unique marine wildlife of Strangford lough and the Down Coast.”

The new Jet Ski guidelines give the best professional advice to Jet Ski users from all the agencies represented on the Strangford Lough and Lecale Partnership including the NIEA, RYA, Sports NI, PSNI, Ards and North Down Borough Council, Newry Mourne and Down Council, National Trust, Ulster Wildlife and DAERA. The guidelines will help to keep the public, the Jet Ski users, and the marine wildlife safe in Strangford Lough and along the County Down Coast.

The guidelines can be found in the Harbours section of the website
