New Mayor elected for Ards and North Down
Councillor Trevor Cummings and Councillor Nigel Edmund elected to the roles of Mayor and Deputy Mayor for the incoming term of office.
Ards and North Down Borough Council has elected Councillor Trevor Cummings and Councillor Nigel Edmund to the roles of Mayor and Deputy Mayor for the incoming term of office.
The appointments were made earlier today (3 June) during the Annual Meeting of the Council.
As we continue to strive to connect with our residents during the ongoing Coronavirus lockdown restrictions, Councillor Trevor Cummings started his Mayoral year in unique circumstances as the first Mayor to be inaugurated through a virtual Annual Meeting which was streamed live online.
Speaking as he took up the role of Mayor, Councillor Cummings said:
"I’m delighted and honoured to have the opportunity to serve the people in our borough during this challenging time.
Despite all the difficulties, there are glimmers of hope and opportunity, and I think the last couple of months have reminded us that we all work better together as one. Our strength comes from our collective actions and I’m heartened to know that the vast majority of people in our borough are continuing to follow social distancing guidelines. This is very important and seeing everyone come together in this way makes me proud to be the Mayor of Ards and North Down.
During my term, I intend to help our entire community build hope. Together, we will build hope in our neighbours, in business and in public service.
I also very much look forward to next May as we mark the Centenary of Northern Ireland, and the opportunity for the borough to play its part in the centennial year.
As Henry Ford said: coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress, and working together is success.
I look forward to meeting many people in Ards and North Down during the course of my term – virtually or otherwise – and by working together, I look forward to making a success of our borough.”
The newly elected Deputy Mayor said: “It’s a great honour to hold this position and I’ll take great pride in fulfilling it to the best of my ability. The Mayor’s theme of ‘building hope’ is one that we can all support, especially in these challenging times, and I’m looking forward to supporting him in his duties this year. Together, we will work hard to ‘build hope’ with everyone in Ards and North Down.”
The first monthly meeting of the Council under the direction of the new Mayor and Deputy Mayor will also take place virtually on Wednesday 24 June 2020 at 6pm.
