Mayor's Christmas Message 2020

A Christmas Message from the Mayor of Ards and North Down, Councillor Trevor Cummings

Mayor of Ards and North Down, Councillor Trevor Cummings in the Mayor's Parlour which is decorated for Christmas.

As we near the end of another year, I’m pleased to be able to bring you this message of hope. We have all endured a very challenging year, some more so than others, but the recent news of an approved vaccine ensures that we can be more optimistic as we celebrate Christmas and move into 2021.

Throughout this year, I have witnessed many acts of kindness from all corners of our Borough. It has been so heart-warming to see people working together and supporting each other. Going the extra mile to ensure that those most in need could access the essential supplies that many of us take for granted.

In many respects, this is the true spirit of Christmas. And as we enter the winter months, we need to keep reaching out to help those around us. We need to keep supporting each other as best we can – our family, our friends, our neighbours, and others.

Throughout 2020, the Council has worked closely with local foodbanks, as well as other community and voluntary organisations, to support our residents. There are so many causes that rely on the help that volunteers bring.

I think it’s important to remember that the volunteers are the driving force of these groups. They are the lifeblood of our community. The heartbeat of all that is good about our Borough. To them, I say thank you from all of us.

Of course, we all owe a huge debt of gratitude to all of the essential workers out there. Many have put their lives on the line to ensure the safety of others. From the officers in the PSNI, to the NI Fire and Rescue Service, and of course the Health Service, plus many others, we are all hugely indebted to you.

I am so grateful for this opportunity to wish everyone in Ards and North Down a very happy Christmas. It goes without saying that Christmas this year will be a little different to the norm but the true meaning of the birth of Christ remains and I hope this festive season brings you much joy.

I want everyone to have a safe Christmas and to enjoy the time with loved ones.

If we continue to do our bit, we can limit the spread of the virus and look towards a brighter year full of hope in 2021.

Happy Christmas and God Bless.
