Mayor of Ards and North Down, Councillor Mark Brooks, has paid tribute to former North Down MLA, Gordon Dunne, who died on Sunday 20 June.

He said: “I have been very saddened to hear the news of Gordon’s death and first and foremost would pass my sincere condolences to his wife Gillian, his children and the wider family circle. All Elected Members in Ards and North Down are thinking particularly of our Council colleague Stephen Dunne at this time.

“As a councillor and then MLA for more than 35 years Gordon was a strong and committed advocate for the people of North Down and especially his home town of Holywood. He was first elected to North Down Borough Council in May 1981 and was Mayor in 1990/91. While on Council he was particularly interested in promoting regeneration in the area and was Chair of the Planning Committee for many years.

“I knew Gordon well and would describe him as a formidable opponent who I always respected. Those on Council who remember Gordon best, remember his gentle humour and ability to keep any political wrangling in the chamber. He was always ready to have a cup of tea and a friendly chat with all his Councillor colleagues after any committee debates – no matter how heated. In that sense he was a true gentleman. He will be greatly missed by many across our Borough.”
