Choose to Reuse in 2022: New Free Service for Householders
Ards and North Down Borough Council is delighted to announce its partnership with Refresh Appliances Limited and the European Recycling Platform Limited.
Having secured funding from the Distributor Takeback Scheme WEEE Local Project Fund, Refresh Appliances is offering a new and free service for householders that ensures their old, unwanted appliances can be reused. Based in Newtownards, Refresh Appliances launched the large appliances collection scheme on 4 January. It is one of several initiatives that tie in with Ards and North Down Borough Council’s ‘Choose to Reuse in 2022’ campaign.
The company is offering to collect large, unwanted appliances** including washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers, electric cookers, hobs and ovens – in working condition or in need of repair. Instead of recycling them, they refurbish the goods and restore them to a high standard before offering them for resale, complete with warranty as well as free fitting and delivery, at a fraction of the original purchase cost.
All profits are invested back into the social enterprise business to provide training and employment opportunities. It will enable five new staff to be employed in Ards and North Down as well as provide training for at least two additional young people.
The service also helps to reduce waste. Reusing or repurposing appliances uses less energy and is better for the environment than recycling. It creates less pollution and the service will help Ards and North Down to reduce its carbon footprint. As part of its ongoing commitments around the sustainability of the Borough, the Council is exploring other initiatives to encourage reuse, which will be shared in the coming weeks.
Ian Story, from Refresh Appliances, said:
“We are absolutely delighted to be able to offer this free collection service to residents of Ards and North Down. We know many people would like to offer their older domestic goods for reuse but knowing who can take them and getting them transported are barriers to putting thoughts into action. We make it easy by collecting the items and undertaking the repairs, where necessary, to allow a resale.
“We hope that 2022 will see many more Ards and North Down residents choosing to reuse. Remember, something old to you can be someone else’s new. It’s something to think about, especially in the New Year when many households have benefitted from new appliances for Christmas or in the January sales.”
Residents are also encouraged to consider local charities who may be interested in collecting their goods. A list of local charities can be found online.
Refresh Appliances are carrying out collections twice weekly. To book a free collection, visit refreshappliances.com or telephone 028 9182 1112.
**Please note that Fridge/Freezers and Gas Appliances are NOT included in this collection scheme.
