Bangor Public Realm

About the Scheme
The council and the Department for Social Development have committed £8M to improve the Public Realm throughout Bangor town  centre.  Public Realm refers to the paving, lighting, seating, signage and public art in the town.  Improvements to these features will  greatly enhance the appearance of the town and should stimulate investment.  Work is due to be completed for Summer 2016.

The Bangor Public Realm Scheme includes the following areas:
Abbey Street, Upper Main Street, Lower Main Street, Dufferin Avenue, Market Street, Central Avenue, King Street, Bridge Street, Quay Street, High Street and Prospect Road.

The Public Realm Scheme aims to:

  • enhance the identity and character of the town drawing on its maritime, and built, heritage
  • deliver a unique and sustainable high quality finish
  • make the town more attractive to a wide audience including local residents, residents, visitors, businesses and the evening economy
  • revitalise the town and attract inward investment
  • create focus in the town centre
  • minimise clutter by reducing signage, bollards, railings and overhead cables
  • increase access by improving parking, sustainable transport modes and DDA provision
  • create high quality pedestrian areas with reduced through traffic
